Salary: how much does a pediatric nurse earn – job

Overall, I really enjoy the work, especially because I can see how the children are slowly getting better. Unfortunately, being a carer is often very stressful. When many new patients join the existing patients, one often becomes hectic and forgets things, or has less time for the children than originally planned.

How I deal with difficult cases

We want the kids to get back on their feet. But this is often a difficult path that is associated with pain. I, too, sometimes take cases that touch me very much home with me in my mind. Once we had a patient who had neurosurgical surgery on his head. A few days later he stopped breathing, had to be resuscitated and unfortunately later died. He was only 13 or 14 years old. That was a shock for all of us. I’m glad that I can discuss something like this well with my colleagues. We also meet privately to cook and also talk about cases that concern us. That feels good.

What qualities are needed for the job

You should be able to deal with children, be friendly and reliable, and above all show initiative. If the patients express a problem, you have to find a solution immediately. Empathy is also important because unlike adults, children don’t always understand what exactly is happening to them and why treatments are needed. They just know it’s going to hurt, or they’re scared. So you have to explain everything to them in a child-friendly way or distract and calm them down. For example, when I take blood, I explain exactly why it is needed and how it works. For motivation, we also have a treasure chest with lots of toys. The children can choose something.

How the pandemic is affecting my job

Since the beginning of the pandemic, it has been a problem for many children that they are housed in a single room and therefore cannot talk to other children as much. It’s often difficult for the little ones in particular, so I try to be there for them, to talk to them and to find out what’s good for them. Sometimes the parents are allowed to stay the night. By the way: You have to talk a lot not only with the children, but also with the parents. That way you can take away their worries. Most of the time it’s very relaxed, but there are always parents who know everything better and don’t want to hear what you have to say. It can be exhausting at times, so patience is required.

How much does a pediatric nurse make

I work 40 hours a week and earn according to the collective agreement, which is 3000 euros gross per month. But it’s rare that I can break up on time. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with the salary and can make a good living from it.

The question always asked at parties

When I talk about my job, many people say they could never do it because they feel so sorry for the children. You ask me how I can do it. I then say that I support the children in getting well. To see how they are doing better and how they leave the hospital happy again, means a lot to me.
