The Marburger Bund and the employers have agreed on a new collective agreement for doctors at municipal clinics. Salaries will increase in two stages by a total of 8.8 percent. There is also an adjustment for inflation.

After tough negotiations, the collective agreement for doctors in municipal clinics is in place. The Marburger Bund and the Association of Municipal Employers’ Associations (VKA) agreed that salaries should increase in two steps by a total of 8.8 percent. In addition, there is an inflation adjustment in the form of two tax- and duty-free special payments. The term of the new collective bargaining agreement is 18 months, meaning that negotiations for the next round of collective bargaining should begin as early as July 2024.

Specifically, the cornerstones of the collective bargaining agreement found in the fifth round of negotiations provide for the salaries of doctors to increase by 4.8 percent in July of the current year and then by a further 4.0 percent in April 2024. According to the Marburger Bund, the fees for on-call services are to be increased at the same rate.

special payments from a total of 2500 euros

The tax-free special payments use the options created by the federal government to compensate for inflation. In both 2023 and 2024, doctors should each receive 1,250 euros net – i.e. a total of 2,500 euros.

“Overall, we consider the compromise that has now been found to be justifiable, especially because of the short term, and will recommend it to our collective bargaining committees for acceptance,” explained Christian Twardy, chief negotiator for the Marburg Association. With the exception of Berlin, the collective agreement applies to around 55,000 doctors in municipal clinics nationwide. The collective bargaining agreement is still subject to the approval of the collective bargaining bodies on both sides.
