During her career, Juliette Gréco was the soul and muse of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The names of the artist and of this district of Paris will now be officially inseparable. Part of the Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés will indeed take the name of the icon of French song who died on September 23, 2020.

By voting in this direction Tuesday, the Council of Paris chose to honor the memory of the “muse” of this artistic and intellectual district of the post-war Parisian era, of which she symbolized “the free and bohemian spirit”. This is where she lived and frequented, among others, Jacques Prévert, Raymond Queneau, Boris Vian and Jean-Paul Sartre.

The corner of the square named after her is located just in front of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés church where her funeral took place, and not far from the Montparnasse cemetery where she was buried.

Juliette Gréco died in her house in Ramatuelle (Var) after more than 60 years of a career where she interpreted the greatest, from Vian to Prévert, via Aznavour and Gainsbourg. As for the Quai Jacques-Chirac in April, the Paris Council has departed from the rule which provides that the name of a personality can not be attributed to a public road in the capital until five years at the earliest after his death.
