Sabine Schödl from the Squirrel Protection Association on the plight of rodents – Munich

Around 30 squirrels live with Sabine Schödl, 58. The exact number can change daily, because Schödl is one of the contact points of the Munich Squirrel Protection Association and the second chairman of the board can be reached on the emergency number 0176 5537 6864. The squirrels are housed in Schödl’s house in Gilching on the ground floor and in aviaries in the garden. There are special running wheels and also incubators with oxygen supply. Schödl, who works with her husband as an assembly carpenter, has specialized in newborns. They get rearing milk with vitamins for bone formation and intestinal stabilization. They are with her for an average of 15 or 16 weeks, older, injured animals for a whole year. In principle, they are no longer released into the wild in Munich. “Otherwise I’ll get them right back,” says Schödl. In the big city, squirrels live about two to three years, in green, safe areas six years or more.
