She was the last head of state in the GDR – and she observed Angela Merkel’s beginnings in politics more than 30 years ago. In the fifth episode of “ÜberMerkel – Vertraute recounting” Sabine Bergmann-Pohl talks about a time of change – also for the future chancellor.

The beginning of the end of the GDR in autumn 1989 also marks a turning point in Angela Merkel’s life: she enters politics and thus lays the foundation for her later career: entry into the democratic awakening, deputy spokeswoman for the last government of the dying state and then, from 1991, Federal Minister for Women and Youth.
