Ryan Gosling is upset that he was nominated for an Oscar without Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig. He even made a statement.

Actor Ryan Gosling (43) has a chance of winning the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role as Ken. He doesn’t think it’s right that his colleagues Margot Robbie (33) and Greta Gerwig (40) didn’t receive any nominations. In a statement he expressed his disappointment.

Gosling emphasizes: “They made history”

“To say I’m disappointed they weren’t nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” Gosling wrote in a statement, which is available to various media outlets such as “CBS News” and “The Independent”. “Barbie” actress Robbie did not receive a nomination for best actress, and director Greta Gerwig also came away empty-handed in the best director category. Apparently almost a scandal for Gosling. In his statement, he emphasized what the two women had achieved: “Despite all odds, with nothing more than a few soulless, scantily clad and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed culture forward and they wrote Story.” Therefore, her work “should be recognized alongside the other very deserving nominees.”

Despite his disappointment, he was also grateful for his own nomination: “It is a great honor for me to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year with so many great films.” He also felt “incredibly honored and proud” that this was happening for the depiction of a plastic doll. He never thought “that I would ever say that.” He then added: “But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no ‘Barbie’ film without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two main people behind this historic and globally acclaimed film.”

America Ferrera is also “incredibly disappointed”

The blockbuster grossed more than 1.3 billion euros worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023. The film was nominated for eight awards on Tuesday, including best film. In addition to Gosling, America Ferrera (39) also received an award for best supporting actress. The actress was “stunned” and “moved” by it. But she also agreed with her colleague Gosling and told Variety that she was “incredibly disappointed” that the two main women in the film did not receive a nomination. “Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie made history and raised the bar with Barbie,” Ferrera wrote in a separate statement. “The cultural and industry impact they have made will be felt for generations and I am so grateful to them for asking me to be a part of it.”

“Barbie” had already suffered some setbacks at previous awards ceremonies: “Barbie” had been nominated nine times at the Golden Globes, but only won two awards for best original song for Billie Eilish’s (22) “What Was I Made For?” and in the box office and box office success category. At the Critics Choice Awards, the film lost to its big competitor “Oppenheimer”. “Barbie” took home just six awards from a record-breaking 18 nominations, while “Oppenheimer” took home eight awards from 13 nominations.

The Oscars, the world’s most important film awards, will be presented on March 10th in Los Angeles.
