For years, a charming young Russian diplomat made contacts in politics and business in Berlin. His target group: young German politicians.

A few years ago – Lars Klingbeil can’t remember exactly when – the young SPD politician at the time received a surprising visit. A senior official from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) came to his office, Klingbeil recalls. At that time, today’s SPD leader was still a simple member of the Bundestag, including a member of the defense committee.
