The Russians are supposed to be cheering the annexation, and so is Putin, of course, but there’s no real mood in Moscow. As well as when tens of thousands flee and the people are getting worse and worse.

The sky over Moscow is getting darker on Friday evening. Vladimir Putin is lucky when it doesn’t rain. He has just spoken in the Grand Kremlin Palace, in that castle-like building with its façade full of windows through which one cannot see. In there, Putin has called the West a dictatorship, its values satanic. The most powerful people in Russia have listened to his hate speech with expressionless expressions. Shouldn’t that be a public holiday?
