Six dead in rocket attack on western Ukrainian city of Lviv

Lviv is one of the places where people from the embattled areas in eastern Ukraine have sought refuge. But there are also attacks in the west – on Thursday the rockets hit a residential area.
In a rocket attack on the western Ukrainian city At least six people have been killed in a residential area in Lviv. Authorities reported late last night that another woman had been pulled from the rubble of a destroyed building. According to official information, around 40 people were injured. Search and rescue operations continued. There is information that people are still trapped under the rubble, it said. Two houses are said to have been completely destroyed.
According to the information, more than 60 people were evacuated from the destroyed houses. Seven people were rescued from the rubble. Overall, damage to 35 buildings was mentioned. A mourning was declared in the city for two days.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that there would be “definitely an answer to the enemy”. “A noticeable one,” he said on Telegram. Videos show badly damaged and in some cases almost completely destroyed residential buildings on an entire street. Zelenskyj wrote: “Consequences of the night attack by Russian terrorists.”
Many refugees in Lviv
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi spoke of the worst attack on Lviv’s civilian infrastructure since Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began more than 16 months ago. He announced that the destroyed houses would be rebuilt.
Russia had attacked Lviv with Kalibr cruise missiles shot down from the Black Sea, the Ukrainian Air Force said. Seven out of ten Russian missiles were able to destroy the air defense.
Many refugees from the embattled areas in eastern Ukraine are also staying in Lviv. Until June, the city in the west of the country had been relatively quiet for a long time. But then she became the target of air raids again. Ukraine launched a counteroffensive in early June.
According to the mayor in June, Lviv has taken in around 150,000 people from other parts of the country since the Russian invasion began. The city with originally 720,000 inhabitants is located around 70 kilometers east of the border with Poland.
