Sieverodonetsk is one of the last Ukrainian bastions in the Luhansk region. After Kiev’s recent successes, Russian troops are now making up ground there again. Heavy fighting is reported from all over the Donbass.
In eastern Ukraine, the situation of Ukrainian troops in the embattled city of Sievjerodonetsk has deteriorated again. “The fighting is quite dynamic,” said the military governor of the Luhansk region, Serhiy Hajday, on Ukrainian television. There is intense street fighting with Russian forces.

After recapturing about half of the city, the Ukrainian units would have had to retreat back to the industrial area. “They have a tactic: just raze everything to the ground so that nothing is left to get stuck,” Hajdaj described the actions of the Russian troops.

The British Ministry of Defense also reported violent clashes. Sieverodonetsk is the last major city in the Luhansk region that Russia has not yet conquered. About 15,000 civilians are said to remain there. The declared goal of the Russian armed forces is to take over the entire Donbass region, which also includes the Donetsk region.

Heavy artillery and mortar fire
According to the Ukrainian military, around a dozen towns in the Luhansk region are under heavy artillery and mortar fire. The Ukrainian General Staff also reported heavy fighting in the Donetsk region around Svyatohirsk. Airstrikes were flown near the town of Bakhmut. According to British information, Russian troops are also advancing on the city of Sloviansk in the Donetsk region.
Moscow is said to have stationed troops with Iskander missiles on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border. The Iskander missile, with a range of up to 500 kilometers, can be equipped with nuclear and conventional warheads.

Zelenskyj visits troops in Lysychansk
During the night it became known that President Volodymyr Zelenskyj personally awarded medals to soldiers in the also contested city of Lyssychansk. According to the Presidential Office, Zelenskyi visited command posts and positions on the front in the city, which is separated from the currently hard-fought city of Sieverodonetsk by the Siverskyi Donets River.
In a statement, the president said he wanted to thank the troops for their great work and service in protecting everyone in Ukraine and the country itself. Selenskyj held a minute’s silence on site. Videos of the visits published by the President’s Office show Zelenskyj talking to soldiers in bunker-like buildings: “You all deserved victory – that’s the most important thing. But not at any price,” says Zelenskyj in one of the videos.
