Russian military plane crashes northeast of Moscow

A military transport plane with 15 people on board crashed in Russia. According to Russian information, an engine caught fire when the plane took off in the Ivanovo region.

According to the Moscow Defense Ministry, another Ilyushin Il-76 military transport aircraft has crashed in Russia – this time in the Ivanovo region, about 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow. According to the Russian agency Interfax, there were 15 people on board the plane, including eight crew members and seven passengers. The ministry did not provide any information about possible survivors.

During takeoff, one of the four engines caught fire. A reason for the fire breaking out was not initially given. Experts are on their way to the crash site to investigate the cause.

In January, an Ilyushin Il-76 with 74 people on board crashed over the Russian border region of Belgorod. According to Russian information, the plane was shot down by a missile from the Ukrainian side. According to Moscow, 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war were on the plane being transported for exchange and were killed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj called for an international investigation at the end of January.
