Russian Roman Kostomarov won the gold medal in ice dancing with partner Tatyana Navka in 2006. Fate has now hit the former figure skater hard: Doctors amputated both his feet as a result of an illness.

Former figure skater Roman Kostomarov is a Russian sports hero. The 46-year-old won the gold medal in ice dancing with his partner at the Olympic Games in Turin in 2006, he is two-time world champion and three-time European champion.

Fate has now hit Kostomarov hard: “Unfortunately, both feet had to be amputated. Now there is a fight for the hands. The patient’s general condition is improving, but he is still in the intensive care unit under the strict supervision of the doctors,” he said Family member quoted by the Tass news agency.

The consequences of pneumonia

The tragedy began after Kostomarov was hospitalized on January 10 with acute pneumonia that he may have brought on. The ex-artist was immediately taken to the intensive care unit. His condition deteriorated there, and he was temporarily put into an artificial coma and put on a heart-lung machine.

But it got even worse: the doctors diagnosed a risk of gangrene. Parts of the body, especially the limbs, are not supplied with enough oxygen due to a circulatory disorder, tissue dies and the resulting bacteria poison the body if they get into the bloodstream. To prevent this from happening to Kostomarov, doctors amputated the former Olympic champion’s feet. It is said that his hands are also threatened.

Touching birthday greetings from his wife

“The whole world of sport is close to him,” said Russian Minister of Sport Oleg Matytsin. “And I’m sure that the work of specialists, together with the affection of his loved ones and many fans, will help him get out of it quickly. “

Kostomarov’s wife Oksana Domnina, also a former figure skater, posted the following words on her husband’s birthday on February 8: “Happy birthday my hero (…) my strong (…) my favorite (…) my champion in everything! I am proud of you, your courage, your strength, your zeal in these difficult moments! Exactly one year ago, even in the scariest dream, we could not have imagined that such a turning point in our lives could happen (. ..), but now it is (…) and we will overcome everything.” The two have a daughter together who is twelve years old.
