The worst attack on Lviv hit people in their sleep. Four people are dead and more than 30 injured. Ukrainian President Zelenskyi announced a response to the attack.

The Russian attack on the city of Lviv woke her up straight away and now she is struggling to regain her composure. The plump lady with short brown hair miraculously survived. “Thank God I found the dog right away,” she says, lost. “Then I went out and sat down. You see what I’m wearing,” she continues, pointing to her pink pajamas.

Now she has to go to the hospital. When the impact came, she was alone, first the flowerpots flew around, then everything else. “Now everything is gone and empty.” A thin black blanket lies around her shoulders. Her face is covered with blood and there is also blood on her pajamas.

95-year-old among the dead

The Russian Kalibr rockets damaged around 30 residential and office buildings, 250 apartments and a substation. At times, around 150 households were without electricity. Among other things, two universities, a children’s home and a school were also damaged. In hundreds of houses, windows were shattered by the blast, injuring people. “We have no windows or doors in the house,” says another woman who was injured.

At least four people were killed in the attack, including a 95-year-old woman. More than 30 other people were injured, including a child, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry said in the morning.

Heaviest attack since the beginning of the great invasion

The attack came late at night from the Black Sea. According to a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, Yuriy Ihnat, the Russian missiles initially flew in the direction of Kiev, but then abruptly turned west towards Lviv. According to the Ukrainian army, seven out of ten rockets were shot down. The other three hit with deadly force.

The third and fourth floors of a residential building were destroyed during the night attack, the visibly shaken Mayor of Lviv, Andrii Sadowyi, explained in a video on Telegram. He spoke of the most severe attack on the city in the west of the country since the start of the major Russian invasion more than 16 months ago.

More than 60 people were quickly brought to safety after the attack and several people were rescued from the rubble. But more are still buried, according to a spokesman for the Lviv region. The disaster service continues to search for survivors.

Danger to life far from the front

The attack on the city near the border with Poland shows once again that people living more than 1,000 kilometers from the front in the east or south of the country are in constant danger. Russian missiles and drones can hit the people of Ukraine at any time.

The spokeswoman for the southern military command Natalya Hummeniuk repeated this on Ukrainian television. “I emphasize that a Kalibr missile launched from the Black Sea can travel 2,500 kilometers and reach the entire territory of Ukraine. It can fly anywhere.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi expressed his condolences to the affected families and announced a response to the Russian missile attack during the night.
