Russia-Ukraine – Moscow calls Security Council – Politics

Russia has again appealed to the UN Security Council over the fighting over Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. Moscow – one of the five permanent members – requested a meeting of the most powerful UN body for this Tuesday in New York, as the German Press Agency learned on Monday from diplomatic circles. Moscow justified this with “continued shelling and attacks by Ukrainian forces on the plant”. The meeting is scheduled to begin in the evening. Russia invaded Ukraine almost six months ago. Russian units captured the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in the south of the country in early March. Kyiv and Moscow accuse each other of shelling the site. With its six reactors and a net output of 5700 megawatts, it is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. In 1986, the worst nuclear accident on European soil occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine.
