Russia blocks “Welt” homepage – media

Russian authorities have the home page of the daily newspaper World blocked. At the request of the General Prosecutor’s Office, the website of the German medium has not been accessible from the Russian Internet since Saturday, according to a register of the Russian media supervisory authority Roskomnadzor. A reason was not given. the World began publishing news in Russian under the title “War in Ukraine” after Russia invaded Ukraine. In addition, the paper has meanwhile employed the Russian journalist Marina Owsjannikova, who became known in mid-March with a protest action on Russia’s state television. On the World-Homepage, a message about the blockade in Russia was tagged “media censorship”. Russia has been at war with neighboring Ukraine for four and a half months now. At the same time, the Russian authorities have since stepped up action against independent media. Numerous sites have already been blocked. Critical Russian editorial offices often stopped working under pressure from the authorities.
