August 31, 2023 is a good day for middle-distance runner Sara Benfares. In photos that show her that day, she is beaming. And the occasion is also a beautiful one. A foundation of the Saarland State Sports Association invited people to the media event with athletes that the foundation supports – like Benfares, who competes for LC Rehlingen. To ensure that she and ten other athletes set off for the Olympic Games in Paris with as much tailwind as possible, the foundation is giving each of them an additional 1,000 euros per month, in addition to the usual funding streams. For someone like Benfares who also studies pharmacy, that’s not a bad sum.
