Rugby World Cup 2023 – Antoine Dupont’s surgeon irritated: “I was annoyed that we could not respect this medical confidentiality”

Professor Frédéric Lawers, specialist in maxillofacial surgery, recently operated on Antoine Dupont’s face. In an interview with La Dépêche du Midi, he looked back on what he has experienced in recent weeks.

He is one of the major protagonists of the event which has shaken the rugby world for two weeks. Professor Frédéric Lawers is the famous surgeon who took care of Antoine Dupont’s injury against Namibia. A specialist in maxillofacial surgery, he was widely put in the spotlight for this operation on the face of the captain of the French XV at the Toulouse University Hospital, the day after the player’s injury. Two weeks after the incident, Frédéric Lawers gave an interview with La Dépêche du Midi, in which he showed himself to be somewhat disappointed with the extent that this affair had taken. He particularly regrets the non-discretion which surrounded Dupont’s injury.

“It pleases me that we talk about our specialty other than in connection with a war”

He was blowing : “I refused the interviews because medical confidentiality is essential and even more so in my discipline. I was annoyed to see that we cannot respect this medical confidentiality regardless of the notoriety of the person.” Dupont’s injury has indeed taken a major place in the media environment and quite simply in that of the 2023 World Cup which is being played in France. His return to competition is still far from assured, especially since the scrum half must see his surgeon again this Monday to talk about his injury.

This media exposure, which therefore had harmful effects according to Frédéric Lawers, still had good sides. The specialist continued: “Of course, it pleases me that we talk about our specialty other than in connection with a war, because it’s the World Cup and because it’s Antoine Dupont. But all that is a story of team, that of the French rugby team and that of the team which took care of him at the Toulouse University Hospital.” While France qualified for the quarter-finals of the World Cup on Friday evening, a possible return of Dupont is on everyone’s lips.
