Queen Elizabeth II has been living in corona isolation at Windsor Castle for two years. And nothing should change after the pandemic. The monarch does not want to return to London.

According to a report by the “Sunday Times”, Queen Elizabeth II does not want to return to London after her corona isolation at Windsor Castle for around two years.

The newspaper writes that she is turning her back on Buckingham Palace, which has been her main residence for many decades. Instead, the 95-year-old monarch wants to stay at Windsor Castle, around 35 kilometers outside of London. Buckingham Palace did not comment on the report when asked by dpa on Sunday.

Windsor has so far served as a weekend residence

Windsor Castle, which has also given its name to the royal family since 1917, had long been used by the Queen mainly as a weekend and holiday residence. 15 years ago she began to spend more time at the castle with almost a thousand years of history in the county of Berkshire. About two years ago she moved permanently to Windsor to have more protection against the corona virus. But recently she got infected.

Her husband, Prince Philip, died there in April last year. Elizabeth is said to be doing without some of her staff in Windsor, where she also keeps horses, the Sunday Times reports.

Buckingham Palace is to remain the centre

The newspaper report suggests that, as in the recent past, the Queen will continue to hold her weekly audiences with the British Prime Minister only by telephone.

Prince Edward and Prince Andrew live near Windsor, Prince Charles – probably the next resident of Buckingham Palace – is said to visit them regularly at Windsor Castle. Palace circles have said that Buckingham Palace will remain the center of the British monarchy.
