Roskilde 2023 festival recap: cult acts and climate advocates

Since 1971, Denmark’s Roskilde Festival has brought generations of young people and the young at heart together around the themes of music, art and community.

Supported by around 30,000 volunteers, all proceeds are donated to humanitarian, charitable and cultural projects, as summarized by the organizers. Over the years, more than 57 million euros have been generated for charitable purposes.

In 2023, too, numerous superstars from the international music scene stood next to a number of newcomers on the eight stages and in various other locations and presented the entire range of musical genres to the approximately 130,000 festival visitors.

Roskilde 2023: Climate protection with performative support

In addition to stars such as Blur, Busta Rhymes and Lizzo, the topic of climate protection was also on the agenda as the – albeit less dazzling – main act. The climate protection activist Luisa Neubauer discussed on the so-called “Arena Stage” with experts from Uganda, Ecuador and Denmark ways to get closer to the goal of global climate justice.

They received artistic support through a dance performance. The figure of the oil-polluted “dying swan” from “Carnival of the Animals” vividly visualized the discussed problems.
