When it became known, a while into Jimmy Carter’s presidency in 1977, that his wife Rosalynn was attending Cabinet meetings and security briefings, there was anger in parts of the press. Was that appropriate? Did the wife of the most powerful man in the world not have to take care of domestic matters? Or was Rosalynn the secret president who told Jimmy what to do?
