Ronnie Spector is dead. The singer of the girl group The Ronettes died at the age of 78. She had cancer.

Ronnie Spector, the front woman of the band The Ronettes, is dead. In a statement from her family it is said that Spector died with her relatives and in the arms of her husband Jonathan after a short battle with cancer. She was 78 years old.

“Our beloved angel on earth, Ronnie, left this world today after a short battle with cancer”, can be read on the homepage of Ronnie Spector. It is also said that the singer was “filled with love and gratitude”. “Ronnie lived her life with a wink, a zippy attitude, a biting sense of humor and a smile on her face.”

Her biggest hit: “Be My Baby”

The Ronettes celebrated great success in the sixties with pop hits like “Baby, I Love You”, “Walking in the Rain” or “Be My Baby”. The trio consisted of Ronnie Spector, her sister Estelle Bennett, and her cousin Nedra Talley. The Ronettes even went on tour with the Beatles – as the only girl group ever. In 2007 the trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Be My Baby,” the Ronettes’ best-known track, was produced by Phil Spector, who signed the band in 1963. In 1968 he and Ronnie Spector married. The two were married for four years, but the marriage did not go well – Phil Spector, later convicted of manslaughter, is also said to have been violent towards her, as she described in her memoir.

In 1982 Ronnie Spector married her second husband, Jonathan, with whom they have two children.
