The Swedish goalkeeper legend Ronnie Hellström is dead. The former professional athlete died at the age of 72.

Former soccer goalkeeper Ronnie Hellström (1949-2022) has died. This has been announced by Hammarby IF, the home club of the Swedish goalkeeper legend. The message reached the club from Stockholmthat Hellström passed away peacefully on Sunday morning with his family at the age of 72. The former athlete had made it public in 2021 that he was terminally ill with cancer.

“We are in deep mourning this Sunday”

The Swede took part in the World Cups in 1970, 1974 and 1978 with the national team. He played for 1. FC Kaiserslautern from 1974 to 1984 and played 266 games in the Bundesliga.

the German club mourned on Twitter: “We are in deep mourning this Sunday. […] Dear Ronnie, we thank you for the time we were allowed to spend with you at FCK.” Hellstrom was “not only an exceptional goalkeeper”, but also “left a very deep mark in Kaiserslautern, especially as a person”.
