The city of Rome is currently fighting against the increased occurrence of Rats and mice around the famous Coliseum. In the past few days, images and videos of rats and mice rummaging through garbage, leftover food and plastic bottles at the tourist-popular amphitheater in the heart of the Italian capital have been circulating on social media.

Situation in Rome “absolutely under control”

The city administration immediately initiated rodent control measures, it said in a statement from the city on Saturday. The necessary steps were taken after the first reports of sightings of rats. The situation at the Colosseum is “absolutely under control,” said Rome’s environmental assessor Sabrina Alfonsi, according to the statement.

In the past few days, the employees of the Roman garbage disposal and the landscape conservation have taken measures. Traps were set up and holes in the green areas and the manholes were checked. Above all, the rubbish lying around was collected and disposed of. Together with the administration of the Colosseum, they now want to take further steps to combat the rats. According to the city administration, there are an estimated 7 million rats in Rome.
