In the 1990s, Meg Ryan was the queen of romantic comedy. With “What Happens Later” she wants to build on earlier successes.

It’s been a good three decades since Meg Ryan (61) became a real Hollywood star. Although she had been in front of the camera before, in the 1990s, thanks in particular to several romantic comedies, it was impossible to imagine the dream factory without her. After classics like “Harry and Sally” (1989), “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993) and “Your E-Mail” (1998), things have become very quiet around Meg Ryan in the film business, especially in recent years.

But that should probably change this year. In addition to “X-Files” star David Duchovny (62), she will be seen again in a romantic comedy. The film is titled “What Happens Later” and is based according to a report by the US industry magazine “Variety” from May 2022 on the play “Shooting Star” by Steven Dietz. Ryan, who also directs announced the project on Instagram at the time.

The shoot is apparently complete

It’s not just a romantic comedy comeback for Meg Ryan. The last major production with her was the film “Ithaca” in 2015, in which she also sat on the director’s chair. Filming is now complete, because as “People” reports, “What Happens Later” is currently in post-production. There is no fixed release date yet, but a theatrical release is planned – last year the target was 2023.

“What Happens Later” should be “really a good movie”.

In an interview with the US magazine, Duchovny is at least already convinced. It was “really a good movie,” the actor said. The entire romantic comedy is all about him and her. It’s a sweet throwback to yesteryear.

The story of the film at least sounds like a typical romance from the 1990s. A former couple is meeting again at a snow-covered airport for the first time since their separation countless years ago. Willa (Ryan) is an independent, headstrong woman with no commitments. Recently separated, Bill (Duchovny) is reconsidering his relationship with his estranged wife and daughter. They take a look at their past together – and what could have been.
