Around 1,200 people were murdered in the attack by the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas on October 7th. According to Israeli figures, more than 240 people were abducted. German citizens are also among the dead and hostages. That’s why the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Karlsruhe is also investigating the terrorists. If Germans become victims of crimes abroad, the crimes can also be prosecuted by German authorities.
The lawyers Hans-Jürgen Förster and Thomas Walther filed a complaint on Friday against the photojournalists who filmed and photographed the terrorists during their crimes. Förster is himself a former employee of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office and most recently worked as a federal prosecutor in counterintelligence. The journalists were “directly involved in the crime” during their photo documentation. In doing so, they contributed to the worldwide spread of the crime that the terrorists wanted. According to lawyers Förster and Walther, practicing their profession as journalists does not protect them from prosecution.
According to the complainants, the people documenting the crimes play an important role. “This aid is part of the concept of ‘propaganda of the deed’,” says Hans-Jürgen Förster NDR. “This will also encourage imitation acts,” fears the lawyer. Lawyer Thomas Walther has contact with German-Israeli families affected by Hamas’ terror. “The role of photographers needs to be examined,” he says. When asked, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office did not want to comment on the matter.
In recent days there have been media reports about the role of photojournalists who took pictures of the Hamas attack on October 7th. The website “HonestReporting” raised the question of whether the presence of freelance reporters who also work for the AP and Reuters news agencies might have been coordinated with Hamas. Israeli ministers then asked Reuters and AP to clarify the role of freelancers in the terrorist attack. The two news agencies deny having known about the terrorists’ murders in advance. “HonestReporting” has since made it clear that they have not made any claims, but have only asked ethical questions.
