In July of this year he stepped through the green door below the Royal Box again to great cheering, but for the first time his step was a little hesitant than usual. Dressed in a black suit with a dark tie – no headband, no racket bag in hand – as he took his place on the lawn at Center Court’s anniversary celebrations alongside other past winners, there was perhaps already a hint of melancholy at this unfamiliar attire in the air.
