On his trip to the USA, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) wants to dissuade decision-makers in Washington from protectionist tendencies. When asked what would happen if Donald Trump were re-elected, Habeck said that he had “broken” all cooperation formats.

bEconomics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) has called for less protectionism and isolation and more transatlantic cooperation in the USA. Unfortunately, there are also tendencies towards isolation under the incumbent US President Joe Biden, said Habeck on Wednesday evening in Washington (local time). In the end, both sides would benefit “if the two large economic areas succeed in developing strongly together.”

Asked about the risk of further isolation of the USA after a possible re-election of former President Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election, Habeck said he did not want to comment on the outstanding election campaign in the USA. Looking back, he could say that Trump “broken” all cooperation formats. “This cannot be in the interests of the Americans. Nationalism harms the economy, harms peace and harms people.”

Habeck left for a three-day trip to the USA on Wednesday. In the US capital he first met a delegation of business representatives. Talks with the US ministers of economic affairs, finance and energy are planned for Thursday.

Germany’s most important sales market

He also traveled to the USA to show “what opportunities we have to grow together,” said the President of the Federation of German Industries, Siegfried Russwurm. “Not everyone in the U.S. is convinced.”

Trump has already announced that he will massively increase tariffs if he is re-elected. The USA is the most important sales market for German companies, which is why the German Economic Institute in Cologne expects billions in damage to the German economy if Trump returns to the White House at the beginning of the new year after the November election.
