On which streets do you have to create an emergency lane at all?
The formation of an emergency lane is not only mandatory on the autobahn but also on multi-lane extra-urban roads as soon as vehicles are moving at walking speed or are at a standstill.
When do drivers have to create an emergency lane?
Many think that they only have to form an emergency lane when the traffic comes to a standstill. But that’s wrong. An emergency lane does not have to be created on the motorway when it comes to a standstill, but rather when a column is moving at walking pace. The expert organization Dekra draws attention to this.
The road traffic regulations regulate the rescue lane in Section 11 (2). There you can read:
“As soon as vehicles drive at walking speed on motorways as well as on extra-urban roads with at least two lanes for one direction or the vehicles are at a standstill, these vehicles must be used for the passage of police and emergency vehicles between the extreme left and the lane immediately to the right In the direction of a clear alley. “
Where do the vehicles have to go?
On a two-lane road, the vehicles form the lane between the left and right lanes – i.e. in the middle. In the case of a three-lane road, the lane is formed between the left and middle lanes. On a four-lane road, the rescue lane must be formed between the left lane and the lane directly next to it.
Can you also use the hard shoulder?
No. The following also applies when creating an emergency lane: The hard shoulder is usually taboo. Exceptions only apply, for example, if the police ask to do so or if the alley cannot be formed differently due to lack of space, adds the ADAC. It is also advisable to always keep a little more space in front of you. This makes it easier to drive further to the side when the vehicle is stationary when larger vehicles have to move through the aisle.

What penalties do you face if you do not form an emergency corridor?
Those who do not form an emergency lane can expect a fine of up to 320 euros, two points in Flensburg and a month’s driving ban.
