Riots on Halloween in Hamburg

As of: November 1st, 2023 6:20 a.m

There were riots in Hamburg on Halloween evening – the police were on duty for hours and used water cannons in Harburg.

According to a police spokesman, 150 to 200 mostly young people initially gathered in the Harburg district. Their number then rose to 300 to 350. They threw firecrackers and bottles into crowds and at the emergency services. Several people were injured.

Water cannons and clearing tanks in Harburg

The police initially had no control over the situation. It was only when reinforcements arrived that the officers regained the upper hand and were able to disperse the rioting crowd. Water cannons and a clearing tank were also used.

There were arrests or detentions, according to a police spokesman. A number was not initially available. There were also anti-Semitic statements, as NDR Info reported.

Police: Incidents also in Lurup, Osdorf and Steilshoop

There were also incidents in Lurup in which, according to the police, around 50 young people were involved. They set off firecrackers – windows of a retail store were damaged and garbage containers were set on fire.

According to the police, around 70 people gathered in the Osdorf district. Officials had given the predominantly young people expulsions from the area around the “Born Center”. Around 100 people came together in Steilshoop. They set off fireworks and probably also fired blank weapons into the air. “Police officers intervened immediately and issued expulsions, which the troublemakers complied with,” the police said.

There were also riots in other areas of Hamburg – but the focus was on Harburg. According to the police, the situation calmed down later in the evening.

Large police contingent in action

The police were deployed throughout the city with a large contingent – including the entire Hamburg riot police, the police commissioners’ alarm units and hundreds of the federal police. The DFB Cup game between FC St. Pauli and FC Schalke 04 also tied up a lot of energy.

There were already many operations for the Hamburg police on Halloween a year ago – including in Harburg. This year, city officials actually wanted to create an alternative offering with a horror tent on Harburg’s town hall square – apparently without success.
