Shortly after Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars, another comedian’s name was trending on Twitter: Ricky Gervais. Because actually he is the most feared joker.

When Ricky Gervais is on stage, Hollywood stars have to dress warmly. At the 2020 Golden Globes, he took on just about everyone, joking about Leonardo DiCaprio’s young girlfriends, James Corden’s performance in “Cats” or Judi Dench.

At the end of his opening speech, he instructed the stars not to prolong their acceptance speeches and not to get political because they had no idea what was happening in real life anyway.

Oscars: Ricky Gervais comments on the slap scandal

The Oscars were presented in Los Angeles on Sunday. Without Ricky Gervais. Instead, Chris Rock, among others, made a joke at the expense of Jada Pinkett Smith and was slapped in the face by Will Smith a few seconds later. Rock had told Pinkett Smith he was looking forward to the second part of GI Jane, referring to the actress’ shaved head.

In the first “GI Jane” part, Demi Moore shaved off her hair. In the past, Will Smith’s wife often spoke about suffering from patches of hair loss.

What a joke he would have made

The incident also caused reactions and wild discussions on the Internet, and quite a few remembered Gervais and his nasty sayings. During one of his comedy shows in London, the Brit now referred to the Oscar scandal. “People were like, ‘What would have happened if Ricky Gervais [die Oscarverleihung] would have done?'” he said, and immediately provided the answer: “Well, nothing, because I wouldn’t have joked about his wife’s hair. I would have made a joke about her boyfriend,” Gervais explained.

The Smiths’ alleged open marriage has been a topic of conversation in Hollywood and the gossip columns for years. Two years ago it was revealed that Jada Pinkett Smith was dating musician August Alsina. Speaking on her Red Table Talk Show, Pinkett Smith admitted that she and Will Smith were split at the time.
