Richard Ferrand supports the idea of a 3rd presidential term

In 2027, French President Emmanuel Macron will not be able to run again. The Constitution is clear: “no one can exercise more than two consecutive mandates”. However, for the former President of the National Assembly Richard Ferrand, it would be fashionable to modify the rules. Asked in THE Figaro Sunday, the member of the majority, unhappy in the legislative elections, regrets “everything that restricts the free expression of popular sovereignty”, in particular “the limitation of the presidential mandate in time”.

“All this corsets our public life in rules that limit the free choice of citizens. It weakens our political life in quality and density, and makes it less attractive, ”said Richard Ferrand in the columns of the newspaper. “Let’s change all this by preserving bicameralism and the Constitutional Council, vigilant guardian of republican principles and public freedoms,” he calls. As for the presidential election of 2027, the close friend of Emmanuel Macron believes that we must stop talking about it. For now at least. “The French expect their political leaders to focus on what needs to be done today and then in the months and years to come,” he said.

More “a veteran than a wannabe”

Politics “is not a business of grub”. “We want to remain an alternative,” insisted the deputy for Eure-et-Loir. Beaten in his constituency of Finistère in the legislative elections of 2022, Richard Ferrand has not spoken publicly since, but remains active behind the scenes, in an unofficial advisory role to the president and the government.

The name of this walker of the first hour, however, returned to the press recently as rumors of a reshuffle, replacing Élisabeth Borne at Matignon. “I’m more of a veteran than an aspirant,” he observes in a pirouette. Adding: “when it comes to rumors, anything that flatters the ego should be considered with caution and recognition”.
