After the severe storms, Rhineland-Palatinate is expecting a new heat wave starting today. Even at night there is no cooling in sight. Experts warn of high stress on the body.

Stable values over 30 degrees in RLP

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the meteorologists are expecting temperatures of up to 34 degrees today and on Sunday. Because of the great humidity, there is a risk of so-called tropical nights in almost the entire state and especially in metropolitan areas, during which the temperatures do not fall below the 20-degree mark even at night. On Saturday evening there could be thunderstorms, especially in the north and at higher altitudes. However, major storms are not expected.

The DWD warns of the physical strain caused by the maximum values. Even more critical, however, is the lack of nocturnal cooling due to the humidity. These heat periods are particularly stressful for old or physically weak people. The German weather service is expected to issue heat warnings for the weekend.

First half of August too wet and too cold

In the first half of the month, August has so far been too wet and too cold – at least compared to the long-term average from 1991-2020. The average temperature of 17.3 degrees measured in the first half of August was 1.6 degrees below the long-term average. The 83 hours of sunshine in the first 15 days of the month were also below average.

More and more periods of heat are hitting Rhineland-Palatinate. This poses health risks for people. The Ministry of Health has therefore activated a new website.

“By looking at the trend for the next 15 days, these negative deviations are corrected a bit,” says ARD meteorologist Sven Plöger. But at the beginning of the month it rained significantly more than usual in August, namely an average of 71 liters per square meter – and that was before the violent storms on Thursday night.
