Mr. Schlauch, you were the leader of the parliamentary group when the Greens first governed in 1998. A year later you spoke self-critically about the fact that the role change from the opposition had not yet succeeded. How difficult is this role change?
Governing is a completely different culture. In the opposition, I don’t have to turn my heart into a murderer’s pit and I can make people happy with my unfiltered opinions. It was a hard cut for us in 1998, but looking back I’m not as critical as I was then. The SPD had not governed for 16 years, we never. Measured against this, the change from red to green actually went quite well, especially when you compare it to today.
