There are hot springs all over the world. But in an Icelandic valley, a very special tourist attraction can be found.

There are hot springs all over the world. Most of the time it’s the smaller pools that entice you with their warm water. But Iceland goes one better: 40 kilometers from the capital Reykjavik, there is a hot river. This can be found in the “smoking valley” Reykjadalur – and the name says it all.

A hiking trail leads to hot paradise

The valley is part of the Hengill volcanic area, known for its hot springs. But fear not, the last eruption was over 2,000 years ago and there is currently no sign of activity. The many columns of white smoke that rise into the sky in the green hilly landscape are special – a reference to the springs. If you want to visit the warm river, you should start in the small town of Hveragerði. From there, a three kilometer long and somewhat steep hiking trail leads to the bathing areas – visitors should plan about 50 minutes for this. But the hike could take a little longer. Because on the way there are many beautiful photo motifs, for example a waterfall, and other steaming springs.

But beware! Not all places are suitable for swimming. Some are hotter than 100 degrees and have a high sulfur content, which can be recognized by a pungent smell. The water is not only too hot, but also harmful to health. If you don’t want to walk the route, you can book a horseback riding tour. However, riders also have to cover the last stretch without a horse.

Natural pools ensure relaxation

Arriving at the river, you are spoiled for choice. There are various places that are suitable for bathing. Around 20 natural pools have formed in the river bed over the years. Just put on your bathing suit and get into hot fun. Visitors should also take a towel and slippers with them.

The bathing areas differ in depth and temperature – everyone will find their suitable spot here. Reykjadalur has always been a popular spot with the locals and in recent years the number of tourists has increased. Therefore, wooden paths have been laid out around the most popular bathing spots to protect nature.

Those who want to continue hiking afterwards can visit the Klambragil Gorge. This is just a few minutes from the river. There are also hot springs and deposits of different colors there. Then it’s back to Hveragerði. Tourists should plan at least five hours for the entire trip.
