When Zubin Mehta, honorary conductor of the Munich Philharmonic, slowly walks up to the conductor’s podium in the Isarphilharmonie this Thursday, led by pianist Yefim Bronfman, a few images come to mind. What aura it has when a large orchestra stands up for a soon-to-be 88-year-old. How the late Celibidache once walked with similar dignity towards the podium in front of the same orchestra, over in the other Gasteig, of which the memory is gradually fading. How he looks at Mehta, very young in his mid-50s and surrounded by the Three Tenors, on the cover of one of the best-selling classical albums of all time. In Rome 1990.
