Review: the chamber opera “Powder Her Face” – Munich

The small stage in the Great Hall of the Academic Choral Society (AGV) still looks innocent with its red velvet curtain, even if the prelude to Thomas Adès’ chamber opera “Powder Her Face” suggests something strange. Because the mini-orchestra with three clarinets/saxophones, five solo strings, piano and percussion immediately begins to unfold a cornucopia of cheekily pointed sounds poaching through music history.
