Review: “Of Because of Lisbeth” in the Muffathalle – Munich

That’s possible in the Muffathalle. It’s just not big enough to prevent the feeling of being in a cuddle group. But it’s also up to Matthias Rohde and his friends on stage. Then Because of Lisbeth is a warm-hearted band that has managed to transform the mood of the high school rehearsal room into a professional one, without having to use the currently popular melancholy of self-accusing young men.

Instead, the Berliners present attentively mischievous contemporary pop, musically clearly rooted in the indie cheerfulness of the Neue Deutsche Welle of the time, without adopting its often silly irrelevance. Von Wegen Lisbeth prefer to look at everyday life, at the “bitch” that you can’t get out of your head, at the freedom of the big city that ends in your favorite pub, and with “If you dance” they have what is perhaps the most beautiful love song in written in German in recent years. So it’s no wonder that the Muffathalle is just steaming with exuberance, especially since the band, after a three-year break in Munich due to the epidemic, is embarking on a two-hour program with material from a good decade of their own history.

Matthias Rohde himself sometimes seems surprised that everything in terms of a pop career seems to be taking its course. Three years ago in the Tonhalle, Von Wegen Lisbeth were clearly newcomers with a handful of smart pop hits. In the meantime, they already seem like an integral part of a scene that conveys young, but no longer teenage sensibilities with clever songs to a steadily growing and aging fan base. A little mental cuddling is still the order of the day, lots of dancing, an overwhelmingly good mood and sometimes a synthesizer goes on strike. But the light show is also much more professional, the dramaturgy of the song flow, the skilful presence of the music. Because Lisbeth has grown up.
