Bestsellers 2021: Bond, Abba and Kerkeling’s cats

2021 will be over soon. What was actually the most successful in the cinema, with novels, audio books, podcasts, albums and songs? The overview to have a say in the hits of the year in various genres.

It was a year of comebacks – from Abba to James Bond, from Hape Kerkeling to Helene Fischer. The following overview shows who came out on top in the individual entertainment categories in 2021:

Movie of the year

The James Bond action thriller “No Time to Die” starring Daniel Craig was the most successful film in 2021. The 25th film from the Bond series made it by a large margin and reached 5.9 million viewers, according to Media Control in Baden-Baden With. The film, which has been postponed several times due to the pandemic, came to the cinema in Germany on September 30th. Actually, the work of director Cary Joji Fukunaga should already start in April 2020.

The 24th Bond “Specter” had around 7 million moviegoers in Germany at the end of 2015, “Skyfall” around 7.8 million in 2012, “A Quantum of Consolation” in 2008 around 4.7 million. In the even more difficult cinema year 2020, with the halls closed for long periods of time due to corona, the most popular film was the action comedy “Bad Boys for Life” with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence (1.75 million). The 2019 cinema winner was the computer-animated Disney production “The Lion King” (5.6 million).

Album of the year

After 44 years, Abba have again landed the most successful album of the year in Germany. The last time they did that was in 1977 with “Arrival” in the Federal Republic of Germany. With its comeback, the Swedish quartet prevented Helene Fischer from being at the front for the sixth time. The 37-year-old landed in second place with “Rausch”.

“Abba will win the race for the top of the annual album charts by a large margin. Their comeback work ‘Voyage’ was at the top for three weeks and thus longer than any other record, »announced GfK Entertainment on December 10th. Overall, the album has already been sold more than 400,000 times in this country alone, it was said. On the streaming service Spotify, according to their review of December 1st, the album “Aqua” by rapper Luciano landed in front.

Hit of the year

The Scottish Internet star Nathan Evans (26) prevailed among the singles. His song “Wellerman” is a shanty, a sailor’s song. “Almost 800,000 sales, ten weeks at number one, countless cover versions from Santiano to Saltatio Mortis: There was simply nothing to get past ‘Wellerman’ this year,” said GfK Entertainment on December 10 as an investigator on the Official German Charts.

The annual music charts were announced for the fourth time in December 2021 – in contrast to earlier times when they only came in early January. On Spotify, according to their review of December 1, the German rap hit “Ohne Dich” by Kasimir1441, Badmómzjay and Wildbwoys landed in front.

Audiobook of the year

Comeback entertainer Hape Kerkeling came up with his book “Pfoten vom Tisch! My cats, other cats and I “go to the front with non-fiction and audio books, as Media Control announced. In addition to Abba, “Wetten, dass ..?” and Helene Fischer, it was probably the 57-year-old who made the most noticeable comeback of the year.

Novel of the year

The American writer and zoologist Delia Owens (72) landed with her 2019 book “The Song of the Crayfish” this time at number one in the best-selling novels. This was announced by Media Control in Baden-Baden for the New Year period up to December 16. The book is about a nature-loving girl who lives isolated in the middle of salt marshes and sandbanks. In 2020 the book was already in second place in the fiction category. The best-selling novel at the time was the psychological thriller “The Way Home” by Sebastian Fitzek.

Podcast of the year

Germany’s most successful podcast was again in 2021 the comedy show “Mixed Hack” by the comedians Felix Lobrecht and Tommi Schmitt, as announced by Media Control. At the beginning of November it was announced that the duo plans to stay with Spotify until 2024.

Game of the year

“The best-selling game of the year is ‘MicroMacro – Crime City’, published by Edition Spielwiese,” announced Media Control. The crime game was also named “Game of the Year”.
