Only Ralf Fährmann has contested a district derby for FC Schalke 04 so far. BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl sees this as an advantage for his team.

On Saturday at 3.30 p.m. it’s that time again: after a season without the mother of all derbies, the district derby between Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 is back. For BVB coach Edin Terizc it is the first duel in front of a spectator and for many Knappen even the first derby of their career.

“It may be an advantage. I know how strong our stadium can be. It does something to the opponent, to a team that doesn’t know it yet and to players who may be new to the league,” said Dortmunds Sports Director Sebastian Kehl at the matchday press conference before the Revierderby against FC Schalke 04.

Kehl, who has played numerous derbies himself, sees his team at an advantage against the Royal Blues, because only substitute goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann knows from his own experience what this game means for the two clubs and their fans.

Terzic is confident of victory – and knows the importance

But Kehl is also aware that anything can happen in a derby: “Schalke will throw everything into the balance. It’s not about whether a team is up or down. Schalke will come to our stadium with great commitment.”

The two teams are separated by seven ranks and six points in the table. BVB coach Edin Terzic is certain that his team will leave the field as winners in the end – regardless of where they are in the table: “In a derby it’s not about the position in the table, it’s about very special games. If we want to win the game, we have to “We bring our qualities to the pitch and don’t just rely on emotion. We’ll certainly have to use that, but our qualities will ensure that we win the game.”

Terzic is fully aware of the enormous importance of the duel: “Believe me: As a BVB coach, there is nothing worse than congratulating the Schalke coach on the victory. We are aware of the responsibility. We know how important the game is for our fans and the region. We know we have to win this game. But we also want to win the game for ourselves,” said the 39-year-old.
