Resurrection: Theologian Reményi on eternal life

The story of Christ’s resurrection has preoccupied us for 2,000 years. But how does this myth fit into the enlightened 21st century? Theology professor Matthias Reményi believes that the hope for eternal life is particularly important today.

Professor Reményi, only one in five Germans believes that the executed Jesus Christ rose from the death. Even among Christians, only about half think this is plausible. Does that shock you?
Well, surveys… they often reflect more on the overall religious climate than on faith itself. You would have to ask the respondents what they specifically understand by resurrection. If it means that a decaying corpse suddenly gets up, rolls the stone in front of its grave aside and walks through the world, then I’m not one of them. I don’t believe in that. Nevertheless, I am sure that Jesus conquered death.
