Republican Jim Jordan fails in the 1st round, marathon in sight

Like a sense of deja vu. Two weeks after the surprise dismissal of Kevin McCarthy, the United States House of Representatives is trying to elect a new Speaker this Tuesday. And as during the January marathon, the candidate chosen by the Republicans, Jim Jordan, will have to fight.

After the failure of Steve Scalise’s candidacy, a group of centrists refuse to support Jim Jordan for two reasons: the absence of a draft agreement on the budget to avoid a “shutdown” by mid-November , and Jordan’s support for Donald Trump’s conspiracy during the 2020 election.

1st round of voting: Jordan fails with 20 defections

The first round has just ended. Jordan could only lose 3 votes from his colleagues, and 20 dropped him while the 212 Democrats united around Hakeem Jeffries. The session is suspended while negotiations take place to find out whether a second round will be organized. In January, it took McCarthy 15 rounds to be elected.
