René Pollesch and the Volksbühne: a report from the crisis area – culture

The good news first: At the Berlin Volksbühne theater is still performed – sometimes even good ones, like the recent premiere, Kornél Mundruczò’s “MiniMe”. This is news and not a matter of course, because theatrical performances at this house are now a rarity. In January there were just eight theater performances on the main stage, in February there are said to be twelve. The rest: concerts, readings, film evenings and “closing days”. Five months after René Pollesch became director, this is a modest program for one of the largest theaters in Germany, subsidized at 23 million euros a year. It is not Pollesch’s fault that performances have to be canceled again and again due to the pandemic – all theaters are experiencing this right now.
