Renate Bergmann is a celebrity on Twitter. A native of Saxony is behind the well-known satire account – and has long since brought grandma to the offline world with great success.

There are a number of things that are noteworthy about Renate Bergmann: She is a passionate drinker without it being noticeably harmful to her, she has survived four husbands and has been 82 for some time – if her Twitter profile is to be believed. The eccentric grandma is followed by 75,000 people on Twitter, and almost as many on Facebook. “This is where Renate Bergmann writes,” she likes to open her tweets before giving a joke about her everyday life or her long life.

Against the background of the current discussion about “Jule Stinkesocke” – allegedly a young, paraplegic doctor whose Twitter account is said to be a fake – many people are asking themselves: Who is behind Renate Bergmann? Anyone who has been following the Twitter grandma for a long time will quickly understand that it must be a satirical profile. It is run by Thorsten Rohde, who makes no secret of it.

Twitter grandma Renate Bergmann has long been a successful author

Since the beginning of 2013 he has been lending his voice to his “creation” Renate Bergmann on Twitter. Rohde is a controller by training, and the fictional character was initially nothing more than an amusing hobby for him. He was inspired by his own relatives. In the summer of 2014, when the account had already attracted tens of thousands of followers, he revealed himself. “It was just a whim. I hadn’t thought about anything, just started writing down on Twitter what I was constantly hearing from my great-grandparents, grandma, grandpa, parents,” the Saxon told the then star.

Interest hasn’t waned since then, and Grandma Bergmann is as lively as ever. She tirelessly comments on the weather, the neighbours, sometimes even current political events. She has long since made her way out of the Twitter bubble. Torsten Rohde published his first book under his pseudonym in 2014, entitled “I’m not sweet, I just have sugar. An online granny tells you how it is”. A whole series of other books followed – from “Renate Bergmann’s big household and cookbook” to “Renate Bergmann’s Christmas adventure” to a book about the Corona crisis. Actress Anke Siefken gives Grandma Bergmann a face at readings.

And because so many people are apparently enthusiastic about the world around Renate Bergmann, Thorsten Rohde even dedicated a book to another figure from her life in 2021: “Offline Grandpa” Günter Habicht, Renate Bergmann’s neighbor.
