Remco Evenepoel with emotional stage victory in honor of Gino Mäder – world champion dedicates Solo to deceased Swiss

Drivers and organizers had decided to take the times for the overall ranking at the foot of the last climb – and only then did the race for the day’s victory begin, although there were no time bonuses at the finish either.

So nothing changed in the classification before the final time trial on Sunday over 25.7 kilometers, the Dane Mattias Skjelmose remains in the yellow jersey.

Evenepoel attacked irresistibly with 18 kilometers to go and arrived in Weinfelden as a soloist. On the last kilometer, the 23-year-old kissed his fist and stretched his index finger towards the sky to honor Mäder. Second place went to Wout Van Aert.

Tour de Suisse: Three teams get out

“After an emotional day and a very touching ride in memory of Gino Mäder, it was decided with Gino Mäder’s family that the Tour de Suisse will continue,” race director Olivier Senn announced on Friday evening. He said: “Today was the worst day of my life but tomorrow is a new day and that’s something we have to deal with as an organization.”

Mäder’s team Bahrain Victorious with the German Nikias Arndt did not start again. “Our entire team is devastated by the tragic accident,” said the racing team. On Saturday morning, the Swiss Team Tudor and the Equipe Intermarche also followed suit, as well as individual drivers from other teams, including the Swiss Marc Hirschi, Mauro Schmid, Stefan Küng and Michael Schär.

“We respect the decision of each team. The withdrawals correspond to what we expected,” said the race director of the French news agency AFP.
