Relief for families: child benefit should rise to 250 euros

The traffic light coalition has agreed on a significant increase in child benefit. Starting next year, parents will receive EUR 250 per child per month, EUR 31 more than before.

Families can expect more child benefits in the coming year than previously planned. According to media information, the traffic light factions agreed to increase state support uniformly to 250 euros per month on January 1st. That would be 31 euros more than before for the first two children. The Bundestag is scheduled to vote on the new sum on Thursday.

So far, it was already planned to raise the child benefit because of the high inflation and the energy crisis. However, only an increase to 237 euros for the first three children was planned. “The traffic light goes a step further when it comes to relieving families,” said SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich. This means an important additional monthly relief, especially for families with small and middle incomes.

Currently 219 euros child benefit

FDP parliamentary group leader Christoph Meyer said: “This is the largest increase in child benefit in the history of the Federal Republic.” Child benefit is currently €219 for the first and second child. There is 225 euros for the third child and 250 euros for the fourth and each additional child.

“By agreeing on the reduction of the cold progression based on the autumn projection, we ensure that all taxpayers have more money at their disposal and are no longer asked to pay additional taxes through hidden tax increases,” said Herbrand. “Together with the increase in child benefit to 250 euros and necessary changes in the solidarity surcharge law, the coalition has put together an overall package that also takes into account the individual ability of families and high earners.” Now “the countries are asked to support the chosen path of relief and not to block it with exaggerated demands”.

Child benefit is to be replaced by basic child security

In the future, child benefit in Germany is to be replaced by basic child security that would combine various family benefits. There should then be an income-independent guaranteed amount for all children and young people. Families with a low income should receive an additional amount. Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) wants the first money from this basic security to be paid out in 2025. Nothing is known about the height.
