Reinhard Mey turns 80 – good form – culture

No arrogance, no pose, no bitterness – but full of love for language and music: On Reinhard Mey’s 80th birthday.

Hilmar Klute

As a child, Reinhard Mey once rammed a water pipe into the sand in his parents’ garden and explained to his girlfriend Heidi that you could hear the devil’s voice if you put your ear to it. Heidi later swore that she had truly heard the devil, and this shows on the one hand that poets always lie to the truth. But you also learn from it that you have to put the unthinkable into catchy words in order to transform it into an adventurously beautiful story that you are only too happy to believe to be true.
