Reims tames Strasbourg and puts pressure on Lille and Monaco

The 14th day of Ligue 1 began this Friday with an enticing display between Reims and Strasbourg. At home, the Champenois wanted to move forward after two disappointing defeats against PSG (0-3) and Rennes (3-1). Facing Will Still’s flock, the RCSA had not won a single match in the elite since September 24. And from the outset, the tempo gave rise to a pleasant encounter to watch. Emanuel Emegha offered the first opportunity of the match to the Alsatians but the slender attacker was unable to open the scoring (9th). Cruel because a few seconds later, it was Amir Richardson who opened the scoring for the locals with a nice shot from the left (1-0, 10th). An opening score which gave much more serenity to Will Still’s band. And at the end of a first period which they generally dominated despite Habib Diarra’s attempt (34th), the Rémois doubled the lead just before the break. Facing the hard-hitting Daramy, Lucas Perrin tackled and scored unfortunately in his own goal (2-0, 42nd).

Returning from the locker room, the match was almost identical to the first 45 minutes. While possession of the leather was generally shared by the two teams (53/47), the best chances were to the credit of Strasbourg. Finally, Patrick Vieira’s attackers were too incisive to make the difference, like this strike that was not biting enough from Kévin Gameiro against a Yehvann Diouf, who was very vigilant this evening (70th). The reduction in the gap of the former Atlético player from the penalty spot at the end of the match will then only be anecdotal (2-1, 88th). The score did not change subsequently and Reims returned to victory after a generally controlled meeting despite some dangerous counterattacks from their opponents. This success allows them to consolidate their fifth place but above all to come back level with Lille and one point behind Monaco, third. For their part, the residents of Meinau are getting bogged down in the twists and turns of the rankings. Fourteenth, the teammates of Gerzino Nyamsi, who was injured in the 13th minute of play, are only three points from the relegation zone.
