Refugees: The federal government, the municipalities and solidarity – Opinion

Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently praised all levels of government, including his own, in the Bundestag for having done “great things” in taking in people from Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia. It is possible that he will use the phrase again when he invites states and municipalities to the refugee summit on May 10th. But then he would run the risk of derision. In the perception of the federal states and municipalities, the federal government does not bear an appropriate share of the burden, in view of the one million refugees from Ukraine and the number of people seeking protection from other countries, which is also increasing again. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has now rejected the demand for more money from the federal government as premature. The outraged reactions give an idea of what is brewing before the refugee summit.
