Refugee policy in Europe: pragmatism against the catastrophe – Opinion

The catastrophe continues on the coasts of Europe. Many EU countries pretend to be crackdowns when in reality there is a loss of control. The Berlin government’s new plan will not change this situation for the time being. But she could do some very concrete things.

At least 494 people have lost their lives trying to escape to Europe this year, probably more. You don’t know for sure, but fewer and fewer people seem to want to know for sure. Nevertheless, we have to keep reminding ourselves that a catastrophe is taking place on the coasts of Europe. It is the result of a political and moral failure. It is rooted in the inability to ensure human dignity and the rule of law at the EU’s external borders – and in the neglect of the needs of natives and migrants in European societies.
