Referendum in Mehring: horror at wind farm decision – Bavaria

Bavaria’s economics minister sticks to the number, but the number remains in the subjunctive: “The planned 40 wind turbines would generate electricity for around 150,000 households and bring over a million euros into the municipal coffers annually, plus rental and tax income and orders for the regional economy,” said Hubert Aiwanger (FW) on Monday about the wind farm in the state forest between Altötting and Burghausen. The state government and business have pushed the project; it is intended to supply at least a tenth of the energy-hungry industry in the Bavarian chemical triangle with green electricity. But on Sunday around 900 citizens of the small community of Mehring thwarted these plans. The result of the referendum could not only set back this one and largest wind power project in Bavaria to date.
